Under the Coverslip 2009 ~ Imaging and Microscopy Competition

Under the Coverslip is a scientific photography competition where all research students from the University of Melbourne are able to present their scientific work as part of an art exhibition.

As well as showcasing the work of the University of Melbourne’s research students, prizes are awarded to the best images at a grand opening held in the Gryphon Gallery, of the 1888 building.

1st Prize: $200
2nd Prize: $100
3rd Prize: $50
plus an IPT sponsorship prize

Exhibition and Opening Night:

The exhibition will run from Wed 25 November to Thurs 26 November in the Gryphon Gallery, 1888 Building, Grattan St, and is open to the public.
A Special opening night will take place on Wed 25 November at 5.30pm. Everyone is welcome to attend.

Entry Details:

Entries must be received by 4pm sharp Monday 20th November 2009.
The competition is open to all research students enrolled through the University of Melbourne (ie. postgraduate, honours, and 4th year engineering project students, including students conducting their research at various affiliated institutes).
Up to two pieces of work may be submitted, each image must be no greater than A4 in size.
Photographs should be in black and white or colour. Only standard three-channel RGB false-colouring is acceptable, no other colour manipulations can be made.
No software manipulation of the images is permitted, other than cropping. Panoramic montages of frames of different images is permitted (see example). Changes to brightness and contrast is also permitted, but within limits. The panel reserves the right to exclude a photo if we believe it has been “photoshopped”.
All work should be accompanied by a title and a passage of ~100 words describing the photograph.

This year's competition is sponsored by: The School of Graduate Studies, the Howard Florey Institute, the Faculty of Science, the Department of Anatomy and Cell Biology, and also the Institute of Photographic Technology (IPT).
