Emergency information
Evacuation
- If safe to do so, shut off equipment, close doors and windows then leave your workplace immediately. Do not take work related items with you.
- Leave your level via the fire exit or the central stairwell. Move at a safe speed without crowding the exit.
- Proceed to the designated assembly area: the grassed area at the front of the Vice Chancellor's residence.
- Do not re-enter the building. Stay at the assembly area until the building is declared safe for re-entry by Emergency Services or their representative.
Fire
- Assist any person in immediate danger only if safe to do so.
- Call the fire brigade by activating the nearest "break glass" alarm or phone 0-000.
- Attack the fire if it is safe to do so and you have been trained in the use of fire extinguishers.
- Evacuate to assembly area (the grassed area at the front of the Vice-Chancellors residence).
- Do not re-enter the building until it is declared safe to do so by the Building Emergency Controller.
Flood
- Contact the Department Laboratory Manager on ext. 43523.
- Try to find the source of the flood. If the valve or tap can be found, turn it off if it is safe to do so.
- Call Maintenance on ext. 46000 and ask for assistance emphasizing the urgency.
Chemical Spills
- If the spill gives off irritating or suffocating fumes, notify all persons in the immediate area, increase the ventilation if possible and if the spill is flammable turn off all naked flames.
- Immediately evacuate the area and place sinage on the doors - Chemical Spill Do Not Enter. Do not attempt to re-enter the area. Consult the relevant MSDS to determine the appropriate response.
- If the spill does not liberate irritating, toxic or suffocating fumes and is not flammable or hazardous, notify those in the area. Contain the spill with the appropriate product found in the spill kit located nearest your area (see below).
- Notify one of the following giving as much information about the spill as possible:
Departmental Laboratory Manager x43523 or Safety Coordinator x44418
Faculty EHS Manager x49982 or the EHS Unit x43050
If after hours contact security on ext. 46666
Spill Kits can be foundin the east wing corridors on levels 1, 2, 5, 6 & 7.
Injury or Poisoning
- Contact nearest first aider (see list on Emergency Boards outside internal lifts on each floor).
- Call ambulance on 0-000.
- After hours contact security on ext. 46666 so that ambulance can be admitted into building.
- Poisons- Get medical help immediately (0-131126). Meanwhile identify the poison.
- Note: All University security guards are qualified first aiders and may be called after hours on 46666 for assistance.
Threatening or Suspicious Persons
- If possible remove yourself from the vicinity. Move calmly, do NOT challenge the person and avoid eye contact. Seek assistance from the first person known to you.
- If you cannot remove yourself from the vicinity, lock yourself in the nearest secure room with a telephone, and call Security on ext. 46666.
- In an emergency out of hours, where you are in physical danger and you cannot ring Security, activate the nearest BREAK GLASS FIRE ALARM. This will bring professional help within 5 minutes. Two alarms are situated on each floor of the Anatomy Department.
- If you are able, get a description of the person written down as soon as possible, don't trust it to memory.
Bomb Threat
- DO NOT HANG UP THE PHONE EVEN AFTER THE CALLER HAS. LEAVE THE LINE OPEN.
- Report the incident to your Supervisor and/or Floor Wardens who will notify the Building Emergency Controller.
- Under no circumstances if the bomb is found is it to be touched.
- Ensure that police presence has been requested.
- Complete as much information as possible on the University's Phone Threat Checklist.
- After hours, notify Security (ext. 46666) and evacuate the building.
