Furness Lab - News

New Students

One PhD Student has joined the lab in 2009.
Leni Rivera successfully completed her Honours degree in 2008 in the Furness lab and in January 2009 commenced her PhD degree under the supervision of John Furness.  She will work with John and Michelle on effects of ischemia in enteric neurons and on neuroprotective mechanisms in enteric neurons.

Three Honours Students have joined the lab this year.
Hima Abeysinghe will work with Romke Bron, John Furness and Billie Hunne on the remote effects of small intestinal inflammation that occur in sympathetic ganglia.
Thayala Chandra will work with Kulmira Nurgali on the effects of inflammation and axotomy on enteric neurons.  He will be based in the Physiology Department.
James Johnston will work with Trung Nguyen, Romke Bron and John Furness on live cell imaging approaches to the investigation of roles of KATP channels.

Two undergraduate students, Mallika Aurora and Christopher Loo will be undertaking a one month project in the lab in January and February 2009.  They will work with Dorota and Katsuyo.


Visitors

A number of overseas academics will be visiting the lab in 2009.
Katsuyo Ohashi from Japan arrived in May 2008 for a one year visit until mid 2009.
Patricia Castelucci from the University of Sao Paulo Brasil, arrived at the start of January 2009 and will stay for approx four months.  This will be Patricia’s fourth visit to the lab.
Kim Steegh a visiting overseas student from The Netherlands, arrived at the start of January 2009 and will stay for approx six months.


Farewell

Maria Bagyanski
In December 2008 the laboratory farewelled Dr Maria Bagyanski from Hungary who was awarded a Group of Eight European Fellowship and chose to undertake research in the lab during that year.

Caterina Mongardi Fantaguzzi
Also in December the laboratory farewelled Caterina Mongardi Fantaguzzi from the University of Bologna, Italy who visited the lab in 2008 for approx seven months.
