Romke did his PhD in Groningen, the Netherlands in virology, working on cell entry mechanisms of Influenza and Semliki Forest Virus. He subsequently moved to London for his post-doc to study HIV cell entry. His move to neurobiology came when he was recruited by Novartis in London to set up viral transfection systems for sensory neurons. This is when he became involved in research on pain and the effects of inflammation. Most recently he worked on the development of sensory and motor systems at the MRC Centre for Developmental Neurobiology in London, using RNAi technology. Romke moved to Melbourne with his family end of 2007 and is now working in the lab on the effects of inflammation on the enteric nervous system. He has extensive experience with a variety of molecular techniques, including in situ hybridisation and will establish these in the lab.
