Trent Reardon completed a PhD in Medicine at the University of Sydney in 2009. Trent initially studied the role reactive oxygen species play in skeletal muscle fatigue. He demonstrated that isolated skeletal muscle fibres fatigue slower at body temperature compared to room temperature, and not faster as previously thought. As a result, the role ROS plays in skeletal muscle fatigue had to be reevaluated. After demonstrating that iron contamination was the underlying cause, he studied iron overload in skeletal muscle. He was the first to demonstrate that the weakness and fatigue associated with iron overload may involve skeletal muscles directly. Trent is currently exploring the effects of metabolic disease and diabetes on vascular smooth muscle function with Associate Professor James Brock.
