Current Field Research
Current field research is on the population affinities of Early Iron Age to Early Medieval period human burials from the Caucasus region of the Republic of Georgia. Situated at the cross-roads of major continents, the Caucasus region is important for understanding patterns of human migration. An international team of researchers including archaeologists, biological anthropologists, geomatic engineers and conservationists from Australia, Georgia, New Zealand, UK, Turkey and India are working on a long-term project at the site of Samtavro in the region of Mtskheta, Republic of Georgia. The project is led jointly by Prof. Antonio Sagona of the Department of Classics and Archaeology, University of Melbourne and Dr. Vakhtang Nikolaishvili of the Georgian National Museum.
