Young Lab ~ Techniques

We use wild-type and a variety of transgenic and naturally occurring mutant mice and utilize the following techniques:

1. Immunohistochemistry and in situ hybridization

These techniques enable us to determine the localization of molecules of interest.

2. Time lapse microscopy

This enables us to examine the cellular behaviour of living neural cells cells as they migrate through the gut and to determine how particular molecules affect migratory behaviour.

3. Cultured, intact explants of gut

These enable us to examine the roles of particular molecules on neural crest cell migration.

4. Collagen gel assay

This enables us to determine if particular molecules are chemoattractive or chemorepulsive to neural crest cells.

5. Spatiotemporal mapping

This enables the motility along the length of the gut to be analyzed over time.
